Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe: Chewy Bite-Sized Treats

Making friends as an adult can feel like a full-time job. A few houses down from us live a family we’re slowly getting to know: a couple in their thirties with three energetic boys. He works as a police officer in Chicago and she’s a nurse. We like them and, eventually, we’d like to reach the point where we can hang out after the kids go to bed, share a beer and laugh about the day. In the meantime, befriending them has become my unofficial summer project.

When my neighbor was sorting through her children’s outgrown items, she brought over two big boxes of toys for our son, Andy. It was generous and unexpected — exactly the kind of neighborly gesture that makes life easier with a small child. The way they delivered the toys was adorable: their oldest son drove a box down the sidewalk on his Power Wheels like it was a grand parade.

To say thank you, I baked a batch of mini chocolate chip cookies. I assumed the whole family would enjoy them, so I walked down the block and left the plate on their front steps when nobody answered the door. A couple of days later, while walking our dog, Weezer, the husband stopped us to say how much he loved the cookies. I asked about the kids — did they eat any? He grinned and said he’d taken the plate up to their room and the cookies had disappeared in two days. I couldn’t help laughing. The boys may have missed out that time, but sometimes parents deserve treats too.

Now, whenever we cross paths, the couple asks if I’ll be baking more cookies soon. The children glance at me with puzzled expressions, as if they wonder what cookies their parents keep talking about. It’s a small but pleasant ritual: the neighbors asking for cookies, the kids blissfully unaware.

Last weekend we had family over and, predictably, I baked cookies again. I made a double batch and took a plate over to them. This time the kids were in the backyard and the dad came to the fence when I arrived. His eyes lit up at the sight of the cookies — he even joked that I was dropping off treats for a meeting. I told him I’d made smaller, bite-size cookies specifically for the kids, too. I’m still curious whether he shared them with his sons or kept them all for himself.

All of this has taught me something simple: making adult friends isn’t always easy, but baking something warm and homemade helps. A little plate of cookies opens doors, starts conversations and builds neighborhood goodwill.

Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies

Classic chocolate chip cookies scaled down into bite-size, poppable treats — perfect for sharing with neighbors, kids, or anyone who appreciates a small, sweet bite.

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 8 minutes

Total Time: 18 minutes

Yield: about 3 dozen mini cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking soda until evenly combined.
  3. In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, or using a hand mixer, cream the butter with the brown and granulated sugars until smooth. Beat in the egg and vanilla.
  4. On low speed, gradually add the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Fold in the mini chocolate chips.
  5. Roll the dough into tiny balls, about 2 teaspoons each. Place them on the prepared baking sheet and gently press each ball down to slightly flatten.
  6. Bake for 8 minutes. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
