Equipment

  • small baking dish

Ingredients

  • 1 apple, large, sweet variety like honeycrisp
  • 1/2 tbsp light butter
  • 2 tbsp old fashioned oats
  • 2 tsp brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (about 200°C).
  • Using a small spoon or melon baller, scoop out the core of the apple, leaving the base intact so the filling stays inside. Remove seeds and any tough core pieces.
  • In a small bowl, combine the light butter, old fashioned oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until evenly mixed.
  • Spoon the oat mixture into the cored apple, pressing gently to pack it in without splitting the apple.
  • Place the stuffed apple upright in a small baking dish. Pour hot or warm water into the dish until it reaches about 1 inch (2.5 cm) up the sides of the apple; this helps the apple cook evenly and prevents drying.
  • Bake for approximately 40 minutes, or until a fork pierces the apple easily and the filling is golden. Cooking time may vary depending on the apple’s size and variety.

Tips: Choose a firm, sweet apple such as Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala for the best texture and natural sweetness. If you prefer a less sweet filling, reduce the brown sugar by half or omit it entirely — the baked apple will still be flavorful from the spices and oats. For a richer texture, stir in a teaspoon of chopped nuts or a tablespoon of raisins into the oat mixture.

Storage and reheating: Store any leftover baked apple in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in a 325°F (160°C) oven for 8–10 minutes or microwave for 30–60 seconds until warmed through.
