Fall at Matanzas Creek Winery — A Sonoma County Visit

Last weekend my husband and I drove out to Sonoma County to revisit one of our favorite wineries, Matanzas Creek. The property greets you immediately with graceful olive trees and well-tended gardens that make the drive feel like a short escape from the everyday.

Although we were tired and planning to head to our bed and breakfast, the staff sold us a selection of wine and cheese to take with us. It was the perfect end to a day of wandering the estate.

Matanzas Creek puts its lavender to good use beyond the fields. Inside the tasting room they run a lavender market offering a variety of fragrant items — sprays, sachets, and other small gifts. We brought back a lavender room spray that smelled so fresh I almost kept it for myself. These little touches make the visit feel curated and memorable.

The tasting room also features thoughtfully sourced snacks. I noticed offerings that make use of byproducts from winemaking — an eco-conscious approach that underscores a broader commitment to sustainability. It’s nice to see creative, green initiatives paired with sensory pleasures like wine and scent.

After a few tastings, we wandered further along the tree-lined paths. Matanzas Creek is one of the most picturesque wineries I’ve visited: a mix of cultivated gardens, native plantings, and thoughtfully placed viewpoints. Even in fall, when colors are more muted, the textures and layers of the landscape provided endless discovery.

There were small surprises around every corner: interesting trees, quiet seating nooks, and the comfortable hum of other guests enjoying the space. The combination of excellent wines, fragrant lavender products, and a welcoming atmosphere makes Matanzas Creek a winery worth a return visit.
