Ingredients

  • 1 lb ziti pasta
  • 24 oz marinara sauce
  • 16 oz Alfredo sauce
  • 8 oz shredded mozzarella cheese

Recipe notes: You can substitute penne for ziti, use a jarred or homemade marinara, and swap the Alfredo for a béchamel or ricotta mixture if you prefer. For a lighter version, use part-skim cheeses and a lower-fat Alfredo or reduce the amount of cheese slightly.

Instructions

  • 1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a 9×13-inch (or similar) baking dish by lightly greasing it with non-stick spray or a thin layer of oil.
  • 2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the ziti and cook according to package directions, aiming for al dente (slightly firm to the bite), since the pasta will continue to cook in the oven. Drain the pasta well.
  • 3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the drained ziti with the marinara and Alfredo sauces. Stir gently to coat the pasta evenly; you want everything well mixed but not overly saucy. Taste and add salt or pepper if needed. If the sauce feels too thick, add a splash of the reserved pasta water or a little milk to loosen it.
  • 4. Transfer the sauced pasta to the prepared baking dish and spread it into an even layer. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella evenly over the top to ensure a golden, melty finish.
  • 5. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. After 25 minutes, remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted and the edges are bubbling.
  • 6. Optional: For a browned, slightly crisp top, switch the oven to broil for 1–3 minutes after baking—watch closely to prevent burning. Let the baked ziti rest for 5 minutes before serving so it sets and is easier to portion.
  • 7. Serve warm with a simple green salad, garlic bread, or steamed vegetables. Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3–4 days and reheated in the oven or microwave. This dish also freezes well: cool completely, freeze in portions, and thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
