Canned Espresso Martini: Ready-to-Drink Cocktail

A convenient, portable espresso martini served right in the can — ideal for parties, tailgates, and outdoor gatherings. No espresso machine or glassware required.

Espresso martinis are a classic, but preparing them for a crowd or away from home can be a challenge. The open-can espresso martini solves that: you mix the cocktail directly in a ready-to-drink espresso can and serve. It’s quick, portable, and eliminates the need to pull multiple espresso shots or juggle fragile glassware.

This approach works great for entertaining at home, girls’ nights, tailgating, picnics, and camping. Using a canned espresso with cream gives a creamy, balanced base that pairs naturally with vodka, coffee liqueur, and Irish cream.

I like to finish each can with an amaretto-infused cold foam. The amaretto adds a subtle almond sweetness that complements the coffee and Irish cream without overpowering them. For a traditional touch, garnish with three coffee beans to symbolize the classic “health, wealth, and happiness.”

Ingredients

A bottle of vodka, Bailey's Irish Cream, Kahlua, and Disaronno, as well as a can of Starbucks Espresso and cream and a glass jar of heavy cream.
  • Canned Espresso – I use Starbucks Espresso & Cream. Other ready-to-drink espresso cans work too; sugar and cream content will change the final flavor.
  • Vodka – Use a vodka you enjoy. Vanilla vodka is a pleasant option if you want a touch of extra sweetness.
  • Coffee Liqueur – Kahlúa for a sweeter, chocolatey character; or a less sweet coffee liqueur for a stronger coffee profile.
  • Irish Cream – Bailey’s or a similar Irish cream adds sweetness and creaminess.
  • Heavy Cream – Needed for a rich, stable cold foam. Lower-fat or dairy-free milks won’t produce the same texture.
  • Disaronno (Amaretto) – Adds an almond note to the cold foam. Licor 43 is an acceptable alternative.

Tips

  1. Remove the can top safely. Use a draft-top or topless opener to remove the lid cleanly so you can mix and serve from the can without sharp edges.
  2. Chill everything. Since these aren’t shaken over ice, refrigerate the canned espresso and all alcohol ahead of time so the drink is cold when served.
  3. Cold foam shortcut. If you don’t want to make cold foam from scratch, use an amaretto-flavored whipped cream product or a ready-to-pour whipped liqueur as a substitute.
  4. Batch making. Mix the alcohol portions in a pitcher and then distribute into opened cans to speed service for larger groups.
  5. Garnish thoughtfully. Three coffee beans per can is classic; a light dusting of cocoa powder or grated chocolate also works nicely.
In focus in the foreground is a Starbucks Espresso and cream can. The top of the can has been removed to show a cold foam topping with three espresso beans sitting on top. Another can is out of focus in the background along with a bottle of Kahlua and Bailey's.

Open Can Espresso Martini

A convenient espresso martini made and served in a canned espresso. Perfect for serving a crowd without an espresso machine or cocktail shaker.

Prep Time: 3 mins  |  Cook Time: 0 mins  |  Total Time: 3 mins

Servings: 2 cans

Ingredients

  • 2 cans Starbucks Espresso & Cream (or similar canned espresso)
  • 2 oz vodka (1 oz per can)
  • 1 oz coffee liqueur (1/2 oz per can)
  • 1 oz Bailey’s Irish Cream (1/2 oz per can)
  • 1 oz Disaronno (amaretto) for foam
  • 2 oz heavy cream (for the cold foam)

Instructions

  1. Carefully remove the tops of the cans with a draft-top or topless opener so the rim is smooth and safe for drinking.
  2. Pour out about one-third of the liquid from each can to make room for the spirits.
  3. Add to each can: 1 oz vodka, 1/2 oz Bailey’s Irish Cream, and 1/2 oz coffee liqueur. Stir gently with a bar spoon to combine the spirits and canned espresso.
  4. To prepare the amaretto cold foam: combine 2 oz heavy cream and 1 oz Disaronno in a cocktail shaker, mason jar with a tight lid, or an electric milk frother. Shake or froth vigorously for 20–30 seconds until the cream thickens and becomes foamy.
  5. Spoon a generous layer of the amaretto cold foam onto each filled can. Finish each drink with three coffee beans or a light dusting of cocoa, if desired.

Notes & Variations

For a less sweet version, choose a less sugary canned espresso or a drier coffee liqueur. Vanilla vodka pairs well for an extra scent layer. If you prefer dairy-free, try a high-fat coconut cream whipped until thick, but expect a different texture.

If you’re serving many guests, mix the alcohol components in a chilled pitcher in advance and portion into opened cans to speed up service. Always keep cans refrigerated until just before serving for the best temperature and mouthfeel.
